The sealed glass tube contains a liquid and several floating, weighted glass balls. As the ambient temperature rises, the liquid becomes warmer and its density drops. The glass balls will start to sink, the heaviest first. The temperature is read from the tag on the lowest floating, ball.

Invented by Galileo 400 hundred years ago.
